Following user testing with providers, we identified two new user needs. We iterated the previous design, adding two additional questions (and a review step) to make sure we gather the information needed.
User needs
As a provider
I need to know if a candidate is safe to work with children
So that I can make a decision about their application
As a provider
I need a know if a candidate’s description of their relationship with the referee is accurate
So that I can make a decision about their application

Ask the referee if they have any reason to believe the candidate isn’t safe to work with children.
Reference#

The question prompting for a reference remains broadly similar to what appeared in the previous iteration.
Reference (for an academic referee)#

Referees can review their answer before submitting their response.
Confirmation and feedback survey#

The courses a candidate has applied to are no longer shown in the reference journey, but provided in the email instead.

Provider view (with amended relationship)#
![Screenshot of Provider view (with amended relationship)](provider-view-with-amended-relationship.png)
If the referee provides a correction for their relationship to the candidate, we show their answer in the ‘Relationship confirmed by referee’ item. Otherwise, we show ‘Yes’.
Provider view (with safeguarding concern)#
![Screenshot of Provider view (with safeguarding concern)](provider-view-with-safeguarding-concern.png)
If the referee has a safeguarding concern, we show their response against the ‘Does referee know of any reason why this candidate should not work with children’. Otherwise, we show ‘No’.
